Assessment Guide G9 Geometry

Lee’s Grade 9 BC Math. Assessment is via the unit test, a non-calculator numeracy quiz, your project and your classwork.

The first five grades focus on content learning standards.  The last three grades focus on curricular competency learning standards, all with reference to the BC curriculum.

All grades are formative until a date set a few weeks prior to the end of the course. Continued learning is encouraged. Resources for continued learning and ongoing assessment are in the second table below. Click ‘how to upgrade’.

How to upgrade

# Type Description Proficiency
i Numeracy Non calculator arithmetic with ratios in the contexts of coordinates and various units of measurement Emg, Dev, Prf
ii Pythagorean Theorem Calculating the third side of a right triangle given the lengths of the other two sides Emg, Dev, Prf
iii Similar shapes: enlarge Enlarge a shape on a grid, including diagonal lines using run & rise. Enlarge a shape on a coordinate system, using a center of enlargement and coordinates to help. Emg, Dev, Prf
iv Similar shapes: computation Use a scale factor or equivalent fractions or equivalent ratios to determine unknown lengths on similar shapes when presented side by side. Emg, Dev, Prf
v Problem solving Multi-step problems involving deduction by redrawing rotated and reflected or nested pairs of similar shapes to assist calculation Emg, Dev, Prf, Ext
vi Project Construction: create an accurate and well presented diagram of a pair of similar triangles (using rays, ‘bow tie’ or nested diagram). Emg, Dev, Prf, Ext
vii Project Reasoning & communication: explain the similarity of your triangles in your construction using correct math notation, explanation and calculations Emg, Dev, Prf, Ext
viii Classwork Understanding and Solving Emg, Dev, Prf, Ext

viii Classwork Respond to feedback and resubmit.

‘Proficient’ is the goal. Students who reach proficiency in topics can focus on building on and extending their knowledge in their next math course. ‘Sophisticated’ understanding will happen for this student over time. Students whose knowledge is still developing at the end of grade 9 may have sufficient knowledge for their future math needs or may feel like they are spending time reviewing and relearning while their peers are learning new things.
