Project: SOH CAH TOA and the Pythagorean Theorem

The objective of this project is to demonstrate how SOH CAH TOA and the Pythagorean theorem are used to calculate an unknown side or angle on a right-angled triangle and to practice using math technology.

Task outline

Create four SOH CAH TOA/Pythagoras problems as instructed below. Use use GeoGebra to construct accurately drawn triangles as question and solution triangles. You may use this right angle triangle maker below or construct your own on geogebra.com/classic

Page 1: Title page & introduction. This page should have the title of your project, your name & date and perhaps an image. The introduction should describe the objective of the project.

Page 2: Triangle #1 Reasoned estimate. A demonstration of using the formula \sin\theta =\frac{\text{opp}}{\text{hyp}}

Page 3: Triangle #2 Reasoned estimate. A demonstration of calculating an angle using any of the sine, cosine or tangent ratios.

Page 4: Triangle #3 Reasoned estimate. A demonstration of calculating a third side using the Pythagorean theorem.

Page 5: Triangle #4 You may choose what to demonstrate with this triangle. You should demonstrate a math process that you have not already demonstrated. Consider choosing a multi-step problem or an ‘indirect measurement’ problem.
