About

Thanks for checking out my math pages. My name is Lee, I teach math in BC, Canada.

tentotwelvemath is a compliation of all the interactive materials I make to support math learning organised by course/math topic.

Bio

Since starting out as a math/outdoor ed teacher in Cumbria, England in the year 2000 I’ve taught in high schools in Norway, Costa Rica and now in Canada.  I now teach high school math in my local school district.

Otherwise, I take lots of opportunities to be out and about or to be making things, especially with family and friends. We like to hike, bike, kayak, camp, explore intertidal life, swim, do puzzles and play board games.

tentotwelvemath.com is a cross-over work/hobby project. There are no ads. The things I would promote aren’t for sale. Things such as fresh air, unscheduled time, thinking, community, fighting oppression and treading lightly on the planet.

But back to teaching. My first preference for teaching is through person to person, in-person dialogue using the things around about us to make math visual and dynamic. I make all the interactive content on the site using GeoGebra (classic 5). GeoGebra offers a super convenient online place for making math visual and dynamic. Pedagogy first, tech second.

Where I live and work (Sooke/Westshore) was historically an area rich with resources, lived on and looked after for millennia and today by the Scia’new Nation, the T’Sou-ke Nation and the Pacheedaht Nation.

I was born and raised in Edinburgh, Scotland. I acknowledge my role in the journey towards reconciliation.

Specifically, mathematics is a human endeavor present in all cultures. Much of the math taught in high school and represented in this website has been handed down to us over hundreds of years through several languages and cultures. The story of math can be mistakenly presented as a single linear story.  The history of math shows overlapping layers and many independent plot lines. In order for the present and future math community to be representative an effort is required to dismantle barriers and to encourage diverse participation.
